Tutorial I

MDA: Where it Came From and Where It's Going
David Frankel, Standards Architect for Model-Driven Systems at SAP Labs, Chico, CA, US

This tutorial begins by discussing the key macro-economic and technical trends that contributed to the emergence of MDA and that are pushing it forward today. Key macro-economic trends include innovation-based economics and value chain oriented business. Key technical trends include service-oriented architecture (SOA) and the proliferation of user interface devices. Then the tutorial provides an architectural overview of MDA in its current state. Finally, it provides a glimpse of the future of the MDA

Tutorial II

Business Driven Development for SOA
Alan Brown, Distinguished Engineer, IBM Software Group, Rational, USA

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) improve flexibility of their IT systems, and facilitate reuse. However, success of those systems depends on there being a close connection between the key business services that drive efficiency and differentiate the enterprise from its competitors, and the flexible IT technical services that enable this. As a result, customers current software development approaches and practices have to evolve, together with the tools that support them. This tutorial will examine these changing practices for SOA, and introduce methods for modeling of service-oriented solutions in support of a broader approach to the analysis, design, construction, and governance of such solutions. The tutorial will look at the use of WebSphere and Rational tools on SOA engagements, and provide some practical lessons from introducing services-oriented technologies into large enterprises to achieve business success.
