 The WI 2009 was held for the first time outside Germany from 25th to 27the February 2009 in Vienna and discussed the topic "Business Services: concepts, technologies, applications". During the conference, trends were discussed both in terms of the trend towards service-oriented architectures and the trend towards service society. The conference was chaired by Prof. Hans Robert Hansen, Vienna University of Economics, and Prof. Dimitris Karagiannis, University of Vienna, which was attended by more than 1,000 participants from over 20 nations.  The motto of the WI 2007 “eOrganisation: service, process, market engineering” addressed a wide range of functions in information systems and discussed various application areas and technical issues. With these and other topics, the conference offered an attractive forum for intensive discussion of current topics in research and industry.  The keywords e-Economy, e-Government and e-Society drove the penetration of businesses, governments and society with interconnected information and communication systems. They characterized the mission and program in the field of information systems and formed the main topic of the 7th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik in 2005, which was held from 23rd to 25th February 2005 at the University of Bamberg.  The WI 2003, in Dresden, focused on the topics media - markets - mobility. Development, standardization and integration of mobile and multimedia services and applications in diverse markets and the related changes in the economy and society were the central topics of the WI 2003, which was held from 17th to 19th September 2003. The conference chairs Professor Uhr, Professor Esswein and Professor Schoop welcomed about 700 participants from research and industry. With regard to the geographical location of Dresden, a focus was placed on the upcoming EU enlargement and the economic and information technology aspects related to the transition and networking processes.  The 5th International Conference on Business computer science (WI 2001) presented with the motto "Information Age Economy - Innovations, methods and applications for e-commerce" was again the most important forum for communication and exchange between research and industry in the field of information systems in the German-speaking area. In a joint venture with the 3rd Meeting of Information Systems in Finance (IF 2001), the finance application areas as well as great challenges and promising solutions through rapid technological developments were discussed. The WI-IF 2001 chaired by Professor Buhl from 19th to 21st September had visitors from business, academics and unversities and provided an extensive conference program with cutting-edge research and practical work at the interface of modern business administration, information systems and applied computer science.  The rapidly growing importance of the Internet during the past years formed the central framework of the WI’99, which was held from 3rd till 5the March in Saarbrücken and addressed the central topic “Electronic Business Engineering”. The conference chaired by Professor Scheer brought together about 1300 representatives from research and industry in the university campus and had the opening speech by R. Klimmt, the then Chief Minister of Saarland. The international significance of the meeting was evident from the keynote lecture given by Professor Malone from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, Cambridge, USA.  The increasing competitive pressure as a result of the market opening in the Eastern Europe and the rapid development of emerging Asian countries led to increasing globalization. As a result of this development the important reference point for the conference in 1997 was international business on the basis of flexible organizational structures and effective information systems. The conference, which was organized by Professor Krallmann in Berlin and inaugurated by mayor E. Diepgen, was attended by around 1,000 decision makers and leaders from research and industry. The Internet was addressed explicitly for the first time as a new key technology in this conference.  The WI'95 offered its participants interesting lectures and workshops on issues of competitiveness through the application of ICT, the use of innovative technologies and the assessment of economic feasibility through the application of ICT. The conference chair Professor König invited Dr. M. Endres, Director Deutsche Bank AG, as one of the keynote speakers and Dr. M. Endres spoke about the use of information technology and the conflict areas of rationalization and innovation. The WI '95 was attended by around 800 participants. 
Even the first WI conference, which was held in Munster in 1993 by the conference chair Professor Kurbel, was attended by about 500 participants from both the industry and research. The focus of the conference was on the integration and organization of information processing. The then German Minister of Economy, J.W. Möllemann, spoke as one of the prominent keynote speakers about Germany as a location for high-tech industry.
